Canterbury is England's most famous cathedral city; being the spiritual home of the Church of England. Famous for Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales with the visitor attraction in St Margaret's Street giving us a glimpse of 14th century England. The city sits on the River Stour in one of the most attractive corners of rural Kent. It is easily reached by train (London about 70 minutes away), sea (Dover approximately 20 minutes by car) and road, using the A2 and M2. The City of Canterbury has been welcoming visitors and pilgrims for thousands of years.

The beatiful Norman Cathedral, which is in the middle of the city, still dominates the skyline as you approach from the North or East; giving 21st century visitors the same sense of awe as their medieval counterparts must have had. Making a pilgrimage was an important part of medieval life and pilgrims flocked to the Canterbury to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket; who was brutally murdered at the behest of the king.

Today Canterbury welcomes visitors from all over the world and has many attractions; with its many ancient buildings, shops, bars and restaurants, it has retained both an old world charm and a cosmopolitan vitality.

The small and compact Canterbury city centre is closed to traffic during the daytime to enable the narrow streets and the many attractions to be more safely reached by visitors to the area. From April to October guided walking tours are organised, leaving from the Canterbury Information Centre , which is located opposite the Cathedral.

A delightfully restful way to see Canterbury and from a different perspective is by taking a Canterbury river tour. Information about river tours can be found on line via Canterbury Information Centre.

Canterbury is famous for its festival that takes place every October. The Canterbury Festival has performing artists and visitors from all over the world; mixing with local people offering a vibrant and varied selection of entertainment around the city.

Canterbury is very lucky to have two excellent theatres in the vicinity. Whenever you visit either the Marlowe or theGulbenkian make sure you use a local Canterbury Taxi.

The Canterbury Festival is currently on; Kent's International Arts Festival is on from the 17th to 31st October 2009 at various locations in the Canterbury area.
